Out with the architect on Heritage Day
In nature reserve and former military site Vloethemveld you can follow a guide on Heritage Day with the focus on military architecture. Guide and architect Michel Van Langenhove leads us around.
“In the beginning there was nothing, a rebellious area, cultivated with the help of a number of farms. Reforestation built a farmstead, after which foresters also obtained their housing.
The Great War changed everything. A destroyed Vloethemveld claimed by military became a depot. Storage for ammunition, a barracks, and various other buildings were placed in a judiciary. They are simple constructions, functional view, easily accessible with the emphasis on safety.
Unique ? Yes and no. In this designed site you can still feel the old layers present under the younger ones. The simple urban development concept with mobility as the basis is an oasis of peace and nature. So unique yes. ”
