Looking for the past and nature of a hidden gem

Vloethemveld is a unique nature and forest area on the border of Zedelgem and Jabbeke with a rich cultural-historical and mysterious past. The Count of Flanders, the Sint-Janshospitaal of Bruges, the farms from the area and the Second World War, among others, played an important role there. From 1944 to 1946 a prisoners of War Camp, a British, lay in Vloethemveld. Prison campaign Camp In that period, more than 125,000 prisoners of war passed from German and Baltic origin, packed in four camps. 

You will find European top nature, military heritage and the memory of a prisoner of war camp through the art of its inhabitants. That combination is unique in the world.

Using sheets with testimonies of persons linked to the prisoner of war camp period, the guide takes the students through the area. After booking a visit, the teacher will receive a bundle with general background information about Vloethemveld that can be used to prepare the trip.
After the visit to Vloethemveld, the teacher is given tips on the themes that were discussed during the walk and can be discussed or worked out in the classroom. The subject areas of history, people and society are central.
